TaKorean firmly believes that businesses have a responsibility to give back to the communities they serve. TaKorean set out to accomplish this by developing a community giving program, in which we pledge a portion of sales to local environmental, food and youth based non-profit organizations in the DMV. Through this initiative TaKorean has made 12 donations to 9 local charities and NGOs in the DC area that are having a tremendous impact raising awareness and alleviating local environmental issues, supporting community farms, providing access to food, and empowering youth through experiential learning, outdoor education, and leadership development.

This year we are thrilled to announce that we have made a contribution to City Kids Wilderness Project.

City Kids Wilderness Project provides enriching life experiences for underserved and at-risk youth in Washington, DC. The program enhances their lives, the lives of their families and the greater community by teaching children how to be prepared for life beyond the learning that is achieved in a traditional classroom.

City Kids uses outdoor and enrichment programming as a platform to build resiliency, broaden horizons, and ensure skills for success. Youth enter the program as sixth graders and are invited to continue with City Kids through the often difficult transitions in middle school, high school and beyond. City Kids operates school year and summer programs for 130 under-resourced DC youth. For six or more years, participants explore Washington, DC, the wilderness areas of the Mid-Atlantic, and participate in summer programs at a ranch in Jackson, Wyoming.

In a city with a less than 65% high school graduation rate, City Kids has shown tremendous impact - in 2013 100% of their high school seniors graduated!

TaKorean’s donation will support City Kids’ Ranger & Mountaineers Program, in which students age 11-13 learn outdoor skills during the school year through their afterschool and weekend outdoor adventure program, and at a summer camp in Wyoming. Through this program youth are supported in their development with an emphasis on goal-setting, teamwork, respecting others and the environment, and nonviolent conflict resolution.

TaKorean firmly believes that experiential learning and activities are among the most powerful teaching and learning tools available as it engages students in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. We are humbled by the incredible work that City Kids is able to accomplish for the youth of Washington, DC. We look forward to hearing how their upcoming Summer trip to Jackson, WY goes.
